The new record COUNTRY STAR came out on 2 June and gigs are planned for July & August in Australia, and for the fall in Europe (tickets in link!). There has also been attention in the music press like the story below from Music Maker in The Netherlands. They wrote that it was a “beautiful organic sounding” record. The title translates roughly to “Rough Textured Alt-Country via Black & White TV tubes”. The Dutch language is all about precision and exactness. Clearly, I overdid when I was asked me about my gear. I told them all about my new-old stock 1957 General Electric television vacuum tubes that currently occupy my main guitar amp – for a long time. They ran with it.

Then there’s this: by the time an album comes out I’ve heard it so often that I’m ready to move on. I’m rehearsing for my upcoming shows at the moment and I should be going over the stuff thats just come out or other things I want to play live, but I find myself mucking about on some new riff, groove or song fragment instead. Is this a problem? I will no doubt find out the next time I walk onto a stage in front of you. Meanwhile, if you havent had a listen to COUNTRY STAR already, wrap your listening gear around this and wish me well!

Dan Tuffy triumphantly blends electronic and earthy sounds on his sophomore album, Letters Of Gold

REVIEW: FORTE MAGAZINE – AUSTRALIA (August 2020)
A record bound to cast a long shadow.
“I first heard Dan Tuffy way back in the 1980s when in Tasmania. He was a founding member of Wild Pumpkins at Midnight, which later went on to ARIA success, before heading off to Europe. Since 1995, Dan has been a Netherlands resident, writing, producing and performing while owner of Smoked Recordings.
It’s been three years since Dan’s 2017 debut solo album Songs from Dan which gathered much critical praise and had him busy touring Australia and Europe.
His new album, Letters Of Gold has just been released, and is a move away from his more country albums to a more unique approach where bass, electronic and percussive elements come to the foreground.
The recording process involved multiple collaborations musicians from around the globe including bass players Madelief van Vlijmen and Judith Renkema (The Netherlands), co-producer, midi programmer and sound-scaper Michael Turner (Australia) and multi-instrumentalists Lucie Thorne & Matt Walker.
I could spend some time talking about all the tracks on this album, but for our locale, the standout is ‘Big Man’, a tribute to our own Chris Wilson. This song was put together and previewed by Sarah, Fenn and George before being released.
A definite one for extended listening.”

  • Setting the Big Man free

This song is my tribute to friend, musical legend and mentor Chris Wilson who died last year. I recorded it pretty much the day he left us but have been sitting on it for long enough now. Its the last track on my new record Letters of Gold. Old WPAM comrade Michael Turner made this gorgeous clip. In fact there is a lot of WPAM energy in this (my old band of the 80s & 90s). Chris loved us and we loved him. RIP Willo you legend.
